Pretty in Pink: Rose Quartz as The Color of the Year in 2016

With a nod to the beauty of natural gemstones, the color experts at Pantone named rose quartz one of the hottest trends of the year.

Every year, fashionistas wait to see what Pantone—the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industry—will pick as the Color of the Year. Pantone thrilled us by picking a gemstone, rose quartz, as one of the top hues of 2016. For the first time, Pantone selected two colors for one year; the other is Serenity, a tranquil blue hue that makes an engaging partner for rose quartz.

The Meaning Behind Rose Quartz

“Rose quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure,” reported Pantone in its announcement, “Like a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, rose quartz reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months.” Pantone also noted it’s a “popular choice for jewelry and other accessories.” We couldn’t agree more!

As Audrey Hepburn, one of our style inspirations at ELIZA Designs LA, once said, “I believe in pink.”

Rose quartz is THE crystal associated with the heart and love of all kinds. It is a stone of unconditional love and infinite peace. It opens the wearer to receive love in all forms, whether that is the love of friendship, romantic love, or warm family love. This rosy stone heals past heartaches, losses and emotional stresses, reminding the wearer of their innate self-worth while providing a calm nurturing energy that encourages love and forgiveness of the self.

Blush pinks look terrific with a monochromatic, head to toe look, so in cooler weather, try layering on a roomy jacket with matching booties and handbag. Rose quartz also pairs well with navy, as well as both dark and light gray colors, or if you’re feeling bold, try pairing rose quartz with plum. On the makeup side, Sephora came out with a Color of the Year Layer Lipstick in Rose Quartz; how fun is that? Of course, our favorite is to wear rose quartz as jewelry, whether that’s a cuff bracelet, a necklace, or a custom piece by ELIZA Designs LA.

Fun Facts About Rose Quartz

  • Generally, the larger the pink quartz stone is, the more intense the shade of pink will be.
  • Rose quartz is associated with fifth wedding anniversaries.

Caring for Your Rose Quartz Jewelry

Rose quartz is a sturdy, durable gemstone with a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale (for comparison, a diamond is 10, talc is 1). Use warm, soapy water to clean rose quartz jewelry; stay away from using ultrasonic or steam cleaning machines.
